Design a Seamless Mobile Experience for Smart Building Access

Overview

We were tasked with designing a mobile app for one of the world’s largest elevator companies. The app allows users to call and schedule elevators from their smartphones—supporting a safer, more efficient, and touch-free experience in modern high-traffic buildings.

  • Deliver a polished, branded mobile experience for both iOS and Android

As the UI and interaction designer, I owned the visual design, animation, and prototyping for both platforms. I also contributed UX recommendations that shaped the final flow.

Business Need
  • Support the company’s innovation goals by offering a modern, touchless elevator solution

  • Provide building-specific flexibility for global deployment across different infrastructures

User Need
  • Users need to call elevators safely and quickly, without physical interaction

  • The interface should feel simple, trustworthy, and responsive—especially in shared or commercial environments

Problem to Solve

How might we design a seamless mobile app that adapts to different building configurations while delivering a fast, touch-free, and intuitive elevator experience?

Design & Execution

  • Applied the company’s brand standards to both iOS and Android wireframes

  • Designed new components where brand gaps existed, ensuring visual and interaction consistency

  • Created microanimations and custom illustrations to add delight and guide user behavior

  • Accounted for all component states to support development and QA workflows

UX Enhancements
  • Proposed an alternative design for the elevator selection and destination floor screens, improving clarity and flow

  • Direction was approved by the client and implemented into the final prototype

Prototyping
  • Built a fully interactive prototype in Figma

  • Created multiple prototypes to demonstrate different user experiences depending on the building's elevator system (e.g., single car vs. multi-car dispatch)

  • Lively microinteractions (e.g., floor selection, elevator confirmation) that make the experience feel responsive and reassuring

Results
  • The design and content teams delivered an approved solution after round 1, requiring minimal revisions

  • Developers were able to begin implementation earlier than expected due to the clarity and completeness of the prototype

  • The approved direction set a new benchmark for modernizing smart building experiences through mobile apps
