Scaling a Design System Across Web & Mobile for a Global Enterprise

Overview

While the specific client and business context remain confidential, I was part of a cross-functional design team responsible for expanding and maintaining a design system, designing responsive web and mobile app pages, and supporting a smooth migration from Sketch to Figma. This work spanned multiple business sectors and included design, system governance, and developer handoff at an enterprise scale

Goals
  • Extend and evolve an existing enterprise design system to support a new line of business

  • Ensure component reusability and consistency across sectors

  • Migrate the full system from Sketch to Figma with improved structure and naming

  • Build out scalable web and mobile experiences using the design system components

  • Support CMS integration and QA for component usage within Adobe Experience Manager (AEM)

Collaborators
  • Design System Architects

  • UX Designers

  • Development Team (Front-End + CMS)

  • QA Engineers

  • Stakeholders across multiple business units

My Role

As a product designer focused on systems and implementation, I led component creation, contributed to naming/taxonomy decisions, and delivered responsive designs for web and mobile platforms, all while supporting internal documentation, QA, and developer collaboration.

Timeline
  • Active project duration: 9+ months

  • Web and mobile experiences are now live

The Challenge

Business Need
  • Introduce new user experiences and workflows without fragmenting the visual system

  • Scale the existing design system to support a new business sector with unique requirements

  • Consolidate redundant components across divisions for greater system efficiency

User Need
  • Users needed consistent, accessible, and responsive interfaces across platforms

  • The internal design team required a reliable, flexible design system for building future pages quickly and consistently

Problem to Solve

How might we scale an enterprise-level design system to accommodate new product areas while consolidating existing inconsistencies and delivering fully responsive web and mobile experiences?

Design & Execution

  • Created and maintained components using atomic design methodology

  • Extended the existing system to include new components tailored for a new business vertical

  • Collaborated with the design system governance team to define component naming, subcomponents, and tokens

UI Audit & Consolidation
  • Conducted a UI audit across multiple sectors, identifying redundant or inconsistent patterns

  • Recommended component consolidations to reduce design and dev overhead

Sketch to Figma Migration
  • Led the migration of the design system from Sketch to Figma

  • Rebuilt components with proper naming conventions, modular structures, and documentation links

  • Worked closely with the client’s internal design team to ensure smooth onboarding and adoption

Web & Mobile App Design
  • Built responsive web and mobile pages using approved design system components

  • Accounted for nine responsive breakpoints

  • Prepared detailed documentation for each component and page layout to support development and QA

CMS & AEM Design
  • Designed modal interface screens and templates for use within Adobe Experience Manager (AEM)

  • Collaborated with developers to build AEM components based on our designs

  • Participated in QA and assembled final pages using approved modal components in the CMS

Final Design Highlights

Visual Design & Branding
  • A robust, extensible design system aligned across web and mobile

  • Structured Figma libraries with modular, well-documented components

  • Responsive, scalable web and app designs that work across platforms and business units

  • Clear AEM templates and interface design to support CMS editors and developers

Results
  • While confidential, the website and multiple mobile apps built using this system are now live and in use

  • The expanded design system is now adopted across sectors, serving as a unified foundation for future product work

  • Successfully transitioned the design team from Sketch to Figma with a fully rebuilt, tokenized design system

  • I'm proud to have contributed to a system-level project that supports both efficiency and consistency across a large-scale organization
